Keoladeo National Park, once the favorite hunting forest field of Maharaja of Bharatpur actually dates back to 1760, the time of construction of earthen Dam by the Maharaja of Bharatpur. In the 1956 this about 29 Sq. Km of land was declared as protected land under the name Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary which was upgraded as the Keoladeo National Park in the year 1982 and included to World Heritage Site list of UNESCO in the year 1985.
Keoladeo National Park, the name derived from the ancient Lord Shiva temple situated within the park, is among the world’s best breeding and feeding grounds for the birds. Nearly 380 birds species are nestling in the Keoladeo National Park, which the winter home of Siberian Cranes. Other prominent bird species spotted in the park area includes Asian open-billed stork, Buntings, Comb duck, Common sandpiper, Common teal, Cotton teal, Darter, Ducks, Eagles, Flycatchers, Gadwall, Geese, Great cormorant, Green sandpiper, Hawks, Indian shag,Larks, Little cormorant, Oriental ibis, Painted stork, Pelicans, Pipits, Ruff, Shanks, Shoveler, Stints, Tufted duck, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, White spoonbill and Wood sandpiper etc.
Kalam or Kadam, Jamun, Babul , Ber and Kair are the few trees which are found in the Keoladeo National Park which provides shelter to about 37 Mammalian species, along with a few reptilians and amphibian animals.
Blue bull, feral cattle, and spotted deer are the mammals which are found and very easily observable at Keoladeo National Park are the major fauna of the park. Other animals found here includes Bats, Boar, Chital, Fishing cat, Gerbils, Hyenas, Indian Gray Mongoose, Jackals, Jungle cat, Mice, Nilgai, Rats, Sambar, The small Indian mongoose, Pythons and Monitor Lizards etc.
August to November months are the best time to spot domestic birds while for spotting migratory birds one should visit Keoladeo National Park any time between Octobers to February months. Bharatpur Forest Lodge, Forest Guest House and few tourist bungalows are there to provide accommodation to visitors of Keoladeo National Park. A few hotels are also there at Mathura gate entrance of the Park.
