Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, the Indian home of Siberian Cranes is situated in between two most visited tourist cities Agra and Jaipur of India. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary now known as Keoladeo Ghand National Park is the heaven of bird watchers in India and is listed with Word Heritages Sites of UNESCO.
Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary a stretch of 29 Sq. Km of protected forest land is among the best bird sanctuaries of the world. With a record of 377 spotted bird species Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary every year attracts several thousands of bird lovers from all parts of the world.
Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is home and breeding ground of several species of Siberian Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits, etc. The prominent and most spotted waterfowl of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary includes gadwall, shoveler, common teal, cotton teal, tufted duck, comb duck, little cormorant, great cormorant, Indian shag, ruff, painted stork, white spoonbill, Asian open-billed stork, oriental ibis, darter, common sandpiper, wood sandpiper and green sandpiper.
Forest area of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is dominated by kalam or kadam (Mitragyna parvifolia), Jamun (Syzygium cumini) and Babul (Acacia nilotica) trees. Ber and Kair are also found in good numbers.
Along with Blue bull, feral cattle, and spotted deer which are most commonly seen at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, about 37 species of Mammals are getting shelter here. Thirteen snake species and seven species of amphibians are also found in the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.
August to November months are the best time to spot domestic birds while for spotting migratory birds one should visit Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary any time between Octobers to February months. Bharatpur Forest Lodge, Forest Guest House and few tourist bungalows are there to provide accommodation to visitors of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. A few hotels are also there at Mathura gate entrance of Sanctuary.
