Construction of Basilica of Bom Jesus a fine illustration of Jesuit architecture was started in the 1594 and on 15th of May, 1605 at the hands of Archbishop, Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes church was made open for public worship.

At Basilica of Bom Jesus Church, main altar rich with gilded work in gold dedicated to infant Jesus. Our Lady of Hope and St. Michael dedicated two alters are on the either sides of main altar. The floor of the church is made of grand marble while the walls has a rich collection of paintings [36 in number] relating to the life of St. Francis Xavier. Art gallery of Basilica of Bom Jesus church is the first and largest in Asia.
Basilica of Bom Jesus Church is the richest church in the Goa and first church in India to be raised to the status of a minor Basilica. Since the 1593, after the dead body of St. Francis Xavier is brought here, every year feast is celebrated on the 9th December and celebrations last for 9 days. During this time several thousands of pilgrims gathered in the Goa.
