Sun temple Konark, constructed in the 13th century from oxidized and weathered ferruginous sandstone is the best illustration for the Orissan architecture construction of Ganga dynasty of region. Located on the seashore Sun Temple of Konark is world renowned for the architectural excellence. The temple is dedicated to Hindu God Surya.
Sun temple complex is designed as the gigantic solar chariot with seven rearing horses and heavily decorated with stone carving. The Chariot has twelve pairs of exquisitely-ornamented wheels. At the entrance of temple there is Nirtya or Nata Mandir [Hall of Dance] exhibiting more perfect and balanced architectural design than several other temples in the Orissa.
Presently major portion of this majestic architectural wonder is in ruin status. However the Archaeological Survey of India is exhibiting collection of temple sculptures at Sun Temple Museum located close to temple site. At some places Sun Temple is also mentioned as one among the seven wonders of India.
According to a popular legend Samba the son of Lord Krishna was cured from the Leprosy by the God Surya [Sun], though it took 12 long years of penance to get rescued from the curse of his father but as this was become possible with the blessing of God Surya, so Samba decided to construct a magnificent temple and as the result of this Sun Temple Konark came In existence.
