Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus or the Victoria Terminus as the railway station was called in the past is among the busiest railway stations of the India. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Mumbai [Mumbai CST] is the witness of many historic movements’ of the country actually this railway station was constructed to mark historic moment of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Frederick William Stevens has designed the construction plan of Victoria Terminus with the essence of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and Traditional Indian Architectural excellence reflected from Various Hindu & Mughal buildings constructed at various parts of the country. British architect Frederick William Stevens has started working on this project in the year 1878. Inaugurated in 1887 [construction finished in 1888] Victoria Terminus become railway station for both long distance trains and local trains, the life line of Mumbai and become famous as VT instead of full name Victoria Terminus. In the year 1929 a separate railway station was constructed for the long distance trains.
This historic monument, architectural wonder Chhatapati Shivaji Terminus was featured in Hindi movie song “Ye Hai Bombay Meri Jaan” of Film C I D [1956] recently again VT was featured in Academy Award Winning film Slumdog Millionaire [2008 released].
In the year 1996, name of Victoria Terminus was changed to Chhatrapati Terminus in honour of great Maratha warrior King Shivaji. Day of 26 November 2008 proved a black day in the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and country as in a terrorist attack 58 citizen were shot dead and more than 100 were injured.
At Mumbai CST there are total 18 platforms out of which 7 are used for the local trains and rest 11 for the long distance trains.
